This season, Lionel Messi has struggled for PSG. Only 11 goals were scored in 34 games across all competitions. Is the number next to the Argentine star's name correct? Obviously not.
However, we must consider Messi, who is 34 years old. Many people remove their boots at this age or contemplate retirement. But, as Italy coach Roberto Mancini pointed out before La Finalisima, Messi is still playing and is as dangerous as ever.
Argentina will play Italy in La Finalisima at Wembley Stadium in London at 12:45 p.m. Bangladesh time today.
Conmebol, the South American football governing body, and UEFA, the European football governing body, had long agreed to stage matches between the two teams that had won the Euro and the Copa America. After 29 years, football fans will be treated to the third edition of the 'Conmebol-UEFA Cup of Champions' competition.
In 1985 and 1993, the contest was held twice more. In 1975, the Euro winners France were defeated by the Copa champions Uruguay. Argentina fell to Denmark, the European champions at the time, eight years later, in 1993. Mancini mentioned Messi at a press conference ahead of this year's Finalisima, over three decades later.
The seven-time Footballer of the Year is still considered "the best in the world" by the Italian coach.
He is arguably the best in the world, in my opinion. We spent many years in Italy with Diego Maradona. Messi resembles him. He is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Mancini also attempted to explain why Messi was unable to perform well for PSG this season. Following PSG's elimination from the Champions League's last 16 round, Messi was targeted by two league fans.
"He hasn't scored much this season," Mancini explained. It's most likely a factor in their bad performance. She requires further time. However, he is, in my opinion, the best in the world. We must be vigilant tomorrow (tonight). Because he (Messi) has the ability to turn the game in a split second.
To defend Italy, defender Leonardo Bonucci is tasked for keeping Messi bottled up. "I've had the good fortune to play against Messi several times," the Juventus center-back said before the match at Wembley. He has won the Ballon d'Or on numerous occasions. To put it another way, he has demonstrated his ability... It's tough to find words to express my admiration for his outstanding performance. With Cristiano Ronaldo, he is one of the best footballers in the world. He deserves to be appreciated. We must stop him and the Argentina team.
