Bangladesh observes National Mourning Day as a national holiday.Every year on 15th August this day is observed nationally and statewide with mourning. On this day, the black flag is hoisted and the national flag of Bangladesh is kept at half mast. On August 15, 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the great architect of Bangladesh and independence, was killed with his family.
The date is August 15th. Today is National Mourning Day. On this dark night in 1975, the worst and most brutal murder in history occurred. On this day, some rogue army personnel tainted the entire Bengali nation. That night, the assassin's merciless bullet pierced the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, in the historical building on Dhanmondi's Road 32.

Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, Bangabandhu's nephew, his pregnant wife Arju Mani, brother-in-law Abdur Rob Serniabat, Shishu Babu, Arif Rintu Khan, and many others were killed by the killers' bullets. Because they were not in the country at the time, Bangabandhu's eldest daughter and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana survived.

In the speech, the Prime Minister said that even though the killers killed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, they could not kill his dreams and ideals. One must always be prepared to unitedly confront any inaction-conspiracy of anti-independence communal groups and anti-development and anti-democratic circles.
Bangabandhu strongly believed that no Bengali could be a threat to his security in independent Bangladesh. That is why he used to live in his own residence number 32 of Dhanmondi instead of Ganabhavan. The house which was very dear to Bangabandhu as the cradle of Bengali freedom movement. From here, he devoted himself to building the war-torn country with all his might.
After the assassination of Bangabandhu, on September 26, 1975, self-proclaimed President Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmad issued the infamous Indemnity Ordinance to protect the murderers from prosecution. Later Ziaur Rahman approved the indemnity as a law in 1979.
Today is a public holiday. Before the Awami League-led government came to power, the day of losing a father was neglected by the state.
The day will be designated as a day of mourning.The national flag will be flown at half mast today. Black flags will fly in government and private buildings.
After the Awami League came to power in the 1996 elections, it was decided to observe the first mourning day in the state. But in 2001, the BNP-led four-party coalition came to power and canceled that decision. However, the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmad came to power and decided to observe National Mourning Day on August 15.
After a long wait, in January 2011, the death sentence of the five self-confessed murderers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family came into effect.
Awami League and its affiliates, various social-cultural-political organizations have taken various programs on the occasion of the day. National Mourning Day will be observed through various programs with due dignity, respect, love and solemn atmosphere.
Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of the party and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, has called upon all the leaders, workers and supporters of Awami League at all levels and all allied, social, cultural and political organizations to observe proper hygiene rules to prevent the spread of Corona epidemic.
At the same time, he made a humble request to the leaders of all districts, cities, upazilas, municipalities, unions, wards and all branches of the Awami League to commemorate and celebrate the day by adopting their own programs in line with the central program.
On the occasion of National Day of Mourning on August 15, tributes will be paid to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at historic number 32 at 8:30 am. Before that, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to pay her respects early in the morning. Tributes will be offered at Banani Cemetery at 9:15 am. A delegation of Awami League will pay tribute at the tomb of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara at 11 am.
Apart from this, special prayers and prayers will be held in all the mosques, temples, churches and pagodas of the country on the occasion of the National Mourning Day on August 15. There will be a discussion on National Mourning Day on August 16 at 3:30 pm. Party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the meeting held at the central office of Awami League virtually.
