What is a domain?

Domain name usually refers to the name of a website. The domain name helps the client computer to connect to the web server. The domain name system controls everything related to a domain name.

In fact, there are five different types of domain names to choose from. Now, not every style of domain name will be right for your website, which actually makes things easier. Before you can register a domain, you need to have a strong knowledge base on the domains as a whole.

History

The first commercial domain name was Symbolics.com, which Cambridge-based computer firm Symbolics registered with TLD.com on March 15, 1985. About 190 million domain names were registered in December 2009.

Different types of domains:

There are several types of domains.

TLD = Top Level Domain. E.g. .com, .org, .net, .info, .pw, .me etc. These are the highest level domains.

gTLD = Generic Top Level Domain. Top Level Domains that do not belong to any country are called gTLD. .com, .org, .net, .info, etc. Some Generic Top Level Domains. And .in, .pk etc. are not Generic Top Level Domains.

SLD = Sub Level Domain: If there is anything before the Domain Name, it is called Sub Level Domain. E.g. blog.linuxhostlab.com blog here. Is the Sub Level Domain. A domain can have multiple sub level domains. Such as m.blog.linuxhostlab.com etc.

ccTLD = Country Code Top Level Domain. Different countries have their own domains, they are Country Code Top Level Domain. E.g. .bd (Bangladesh), .pk (Pakistan), .us (America), .uk (United Kingdom), .in (India) etc.

The world's first domain is symbolics.com. It was registered by the Massachusetts computer company Symbolics on March 15, 1985.

Top level domains: .com .net .org .info etc. domains are called top level domains. (These domains are to be purchased)

Free Domains: .blog.com .xtgem.com .blogspot.com .tk, wordpress.com, weebly.com etc. domains are called free domains. (These domains are available for free)

The price of a top level domain can go up to Rs. 700-1000 for 1 year.
